Testimony of a Fellow

My passion for cancer surgery is the reason I chose, after graduation, to specialize in General Surgery. Over the years of my specialty, I tried to shape my own path toward a career as a Surgical Oncologist by selecting the best centers in Italy and abroad. The establishment of the fellowship sponsored by the SICO Foundation was a key turning point for me at the end of my residency because it provided me with the opportunity to continue, as I had planned, training in oncologic surgery, within Italian excellence. Fellowship pathways are varied when looking overseas, and those who aspire to become cancer surgeons must travel to complete their training. In Italy it is not mandatory to have a specific title to deal with oncology in surgery, so it is up to the individual’s sensibility and inclination to take such a path. I believe that the fellowship promoted by the SICO Foundation can revolutionize the national training scenario for surgeons involved in cancer patient care by establishing a unified and structured path. This effort and the investment made will, in my opinion, ensure homogenization and an increase in quality in health care delivery, raising its level. Having now reached the halfway point of my ultra-specialization in cancer surgery, I can say with certainty that I have found daily, in discussions with my mentors and colleagues, in multidisciplinary discussion groups, and in operating room activities, constant stimulation and opportunities to learn, apply and grow by enriching my clinical and scientific theoretical background, refining my technical skills and creating around me a network of knowledge that will accompany me in the future in patient care.
