New SICO call for training in cancer surgery

The Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (SICO) has announced three fellowship positions in cancer surgery for 2025, as part of the two-year excellence training program inaugurated in 2023. The program aims to train young oncology surgeons so that they can become the future leaders in the multidisciplinary approach to the cancer patient.

The call is open to physicians with Specialization in General Surgery performed at an Italian University, with scientific and clinical curriculum in the area of Surgical Oncology, within 45 years of age, with a good knowledge of English (spoken and written) and in good standing with the annual membership fee to SICO.

Selection will be by qualifications and oral interview, with the aim of assessing the theoretical and practical skills of the candidates and applicants, as well as their motivation and career plan.

Applicants and candidates should send their applications by e-mail to fellowshipsico@sicoweb.it no later than September 15, 2024 in accordance with the procedures indicated in the announcement that can be found on the SICO website (FELLOWSHIP IN ONCOLOGIC SURGERY – SICO / Italian Society of Oncologic Surgery (sicoweb.it)).

Those who pass the comparative evaluation of the Titles will be invited to present for the oral test, which will take place at the annual National Congress of the Society of Surgical Oncology (6th National Conference of Surgical Oncology) to be held September 26-28, 2024, in Messina, Italy, on a date that will be communicated to those selected at least 10 days before the oral selection test is held.

The established gross amount of the fellowship is €60,000 (sixty thousand/euro) for the 24 months (€30,000 annually). The start of the activity is scheduled to begin in January 2025.

The three fellowship winners will have the opportunity to pursue customized training, choosing four rotations of four months each from the following areas: gastro-intestinal, colorectal,; sarcomas,; pancreas,; liver,; peritoneum,; melanoma,; udder.

Rotations will take place at national centers of excellence under the supervision of qualified mentors. In addition to clinical activity, fellows will engage in teaching and research, possibly including participation in courses, conferences, workshops and scientific publications. At the end of the program, fellows will receive a diploma and a letter of introduction from SICO with which they can access ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) certification and thus the EBSQ (European Board Surgical Oncology Qualification) examination.

The fellowship in oncologic surgery is a unique opportunity to grow professionally and access a network of high-level contacts and collaborations. It also represents a fundamental contribution to the quality and innovation of Italian oncologic surgery, to the benefit of patients and society.

This Call for Proposals complies with the Guidelines for Public Contracts financed with PNRR and PNC resources, aimed at fostering gender and generational equality and employment inclusion of people with disabilities. It also intends to respect and promote the EU Strategy for Gender Equality 2020-2025, which contains a series of actions considered key to achieving traditional gender balance goals: stop violence and gender stereotyping ,; equality of participation and opportunity in the labor market.,; equal pay,; gender balance in decision-making and policy making.
